Garden Design - Bromley-by-Bow, London E3

The design creates an area split into two main sections, both of which would be perfectly suited to dining, entertaining and relaxing. The underlying idea is to create a garden which acts as a continuation of the kitchen space, serving to be both practical and welcoming whilst being attractive when viewed from the level above.

The area directly outside the back door would be decked, with space left for the client to adorn the walls or floor space with pots, containers, and other ornamentation. This area would be the ideal situation for a café style table and chairs, carefully placed in order to make the most of the early morning sunshine.

The first decked area would terminate just before the existing cherry tree, where an area dedicated to planting would begin. This area would be bridged with a decked walkway, leading to a second decked area beyond. The planting in the central area shall consist of evergreen and semi-evergreen specimen interspersed with the occasional red flowering perennial. Both the entrance and exit to the decked walkway will feature bespoke red perspex planters (with optional underlighting), one to the left and one to the right. These planters will be a contemporary take on traditional Victorian urns, and will comprise metre high perspex plinths supporting one foot cubed planters, each of which will contain a striking green Cordyline. The marrying of colourful perspex and evergreen Cordyline will help to provide interest to the space throughout the seasons.

The issue of privacy shall be addressed with the erection of scaffold poles between 2 metres and 4 metres high (the highest being at the bottom of the garden to screen off the new development), conjoined with stainless steel wire running horizontally at regular intervals to form a framework upon which evergreen climbers will be trained. This framework will begin above the existing wall and will be adorned with a smattering of red perspex squares strung between the horizontal wires to create a visual cornucopia of light, texture and colour.

The second decked area will be divided from the rest of the garden by two large stainless steel planters in which large bamboo will be housed, while a stainless steel water feature (to be supplied by the client) placed end centre will form the main focal point to the space.

The lighting scheme will be simple and effective. White LED decking lights will cuff the edge of the first area of decking. Gentle spots placed inside the columns of the perspex planters will create a warm glow, whilst spotlights sited within the stainless steel planters will uplight the bamboo and play off the red perspex squares in the steel wire screening. Downlighters in the second decked area will focus light upon on the water feature, whilst simultaneously illuminating the floor space to create a general wash to aid nocturnal entertaining.
