Garden Design - Finsbury, London EC1

Our solution to the brief is a quirky, '70s inspired garden, featuring a
large decked area into which slate tiles will be laid at selected points. A
strong, architectural planting scheme will introduce spiky foliage and
elegant, blue-hued grasses, chosen to bring a sense of style and flair to
the space.
The right hand side of the main decked area will accommodate a long, narrow,
fixed bench and freestanding table, both constructed from deck boards for
continuity. To the left of the space, a glass block bar with toughened glass
top will create a functional yet funky focal point. As well as imparting a
sense of retro style, the use of glass blocks will also allow the bar be
back lit at night as an aid to nocturnal entertaining.
A freestanding stainless steel water wall will take pride of place at the
far end of the decked area, drawing the eye up the space as one enters the
garden from the house. Focus points will be also created around the space by
use of steel wire gabions, which will be filled with a variety of materials
to produce a set of highly unusual sculptures. The choice of filler would
include empty glass bottles, which would allow the towers to be lit from
within for a heightened dramatic effect.
The existing fencing will be painted a chocolate brown and adorned with two
large custom made 'splat' ornaments, one attached to each side. These will
be made from durable marine ply and painted vivid turquoise and deep maroon
to bring extra colour and individuality to the space.
The finishing touches to the space will come in the form of a lighting
scheme, which will comprise 18 deck lights strategically placed around the
space and low voltage spot lights for the beds.
