Garden Design - Ilford, Essex IG1

The Brief
- 1930s suburban garden
- Space is virtually empty and has little of interest to offer
- Ugly brick wall at bottom of garden
- Patchy lawn, which is dead in places
- Old and tired looking concrete patio
- Good fences
The Solution
- Sensual minimalist garden with exceptionally low maintenance
- Planting palette principally consists of green foliage with a splash of
red, and includes stylish corkscrew hazel and willow alongside lush
hostas, dramatic bamboo and delicate white snowdrops. Evergreen and
semi-evergreen foliage will bring year round interest to the space
- Bamboo screening along the length of both boundary fences will give the
space extra privacy and serve to bring a sense of unification to the
garden
- The brick wall at the end of the garden will be painted pure white in
keeping with the stark, minimalist style of the space
- A diverse selection of organic and man-made materials, chosen for their
various textures and form, will be used within the space, including
treated wooden decking, natural stone mulch, and contemporary stainless
steel rill
- The water rill consists of a welded and sealed stainless steel tray,
6000mm x 500mm x 200mm approx. The rill will include a filter to
maintain the water clarity and will be decorated with Cornish cobbles
placed along the bottom
- There will be large decked areas at either end of the garden, each with
a variety of possible uses. These versatile spaces will be large enough
to offer the potential to add structures or features to them at a later
date - e.g. a pergola, a spa, an exterior bar, fixed bench seating, and
so on
- The two decked areas will be joined by a decked walkway running down
the middle of the garden. The walkway gives a sense of journey through
the space, passing over the water rill while flanked on either side by
arrow bamboo
- An 8' x 12' space on right hand side of the garden will be left
untouched and will give the client a large enough area to erect a
structure for use as a personal gymnasium
- The area directly to side of house will be enclosed - on 2 sides by
house, the 3rd side by fence and the 4th by a bamboo arch to create a
private relaxation area suitable for morning coffee and relaxation
