Garden Design - Kidbrooke, London SE3

The broken fence to the left of the space would be replaced with a brick built wall. Both the new wall and the existing wall will be painted white. The new wall will help to overcome the issue of encroachment by the garden next door. Painting the walls white will provide warmth and light to the space, and will also serve as a stylish background to a variety of climbing plants
In keeping with the cottage garden look requested by the client, the space will be packed with hardy evergreens to provide backbone to the planting scheme, interspersed with soft flowering perennials to bring the borders to life in the spring and summer months.
The garden will also feature a selection of herbs and fruits -Grapes to grow along the white walls, a large flowering cherry tree with edible fruit, redcurrants amongst the beds, and a lemon tree planted in a pot. A selection of traditional perennial garden herbs will yield a fair amount for culinary use year after year, which can be supplemented every spring with annuals such as dill and basil for the full palette.
A winding path will lend the illusion of space to the garden. Leading from the back door it will wind to the right, where it will widen enough to potentially accommodate a table and chairs. It will then sweep left towards the bottom of the space, where it will end in an oval shaped area wide enough for a seat so that the garden can be viewed from a different perspective
To either side of the path will be deep beds, packed with deep lush planting in a riot of colours
A small water feature, consisting of a small trough or wide rimmed pot, will allow for marginal and aquatic plants in the garden without the expense and maintenance of a larger, filtered feature.
A space will be left unplanted to allow access from the street to the garden via a fence panel
The elegance and simplicity of this space will make it ideal for al fresco dining, or relaxing and contemplation, with a diverse enough planting scheme to create interest throughout the seasons
