Garden Design - Shoreditch, London E1

This L-shaped garden will feature a decorative concrete and granite patio laid in a diagonal ‘wave’ pattern, that will appear to travel from left to right through the extension to create the illusion that the garden is bigger than it actually is.

Lines of beige granite setts will serve to break up the decorative concrete paving, providing continuity and a sense of movement through the garden, and most especially visually linking the two sides of the ‘L’.

The top left hand corner of the garden will benefit from an ellipse of yellow balau decking, featuring a raised planter and fixed bench seat constructed from a rendered block base and topped with wave paving edged with beige granite setts. The rear and left hand boundaries will be replaced to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the garden. The left hand boundary will be extended past the existing gate, to give the garden additional useable area, and will feature a bespoke 1.8m high timber fence, constructed from horizontal 10cm slats installed on timber posts with 2.5cm gaps between each horizontal run of slats. The rear boundary and last three metres of the left hand boundary will feature a 1.2m high Yellow stock brick wall finished with 60cm of bespoke timber fence. A bespoke gate will be constructed to match the fencing. To the right of the decking a striking back-lit stainless steel water blade will cascade into a raised oval pool, which in turn will gently fall into a narrow black pvc lined sunken rill. This rill will follow the rippling pattern of the paving, running across the space in front of the decking patio.

For added comfort and privacy, a circular sun seat with a shade canopy and cushions can be enjoyed in the side-return, thus making good use of this space.

Yellow groove bamboo and a luscious green cordyline will provide striking feature planting around the decking, with evergreen flowering climbers adorning the boundary fences. Pebble beds with a mixture of evergreen succulent rock plants will give an understated sense of coastal living, in between which a select group of perennials will appear to herald the changing seasons.
