Modern Family Garden Design in Maidstone

Grow a Friendly Space

Brief

The clients had a design drawn previously for this new build garden. However, the previous design did not account for the extension that they have subsequently build, so they require a new design to amalgamate the existing garden and new layout. They would like to make the most of the attractive new boundaries in the space and the new design should retain the existing raised beds. The brief is to include a hot tub, outdoor kitchen, two dining areas and a lawn. The client’s like strong clean lines to match the house interior and the new design should make the most of the multiple view points from the house.

Solution

The bifold doors open out onto a patio comprising porcelain tiles with a red clay paver detail. A black granite linear paved bisecting the centre of the garden will create the illusion of depth. Towards the rear of the space the pathway will become a sunken rill water feature, with a stainless steel water blade installed on a raised bed at the end. To the right of the path will be a large rectangular lawn edged with strips of porcelain paving. The back left corner of the space will feature a patio laid with porcelain paving slabs in a stretcher pattern, large enough to accommodate some outdoor sofas and featuring a freestanding fireplace for evening entertaining on colder days.

The bottom left section of the garden directly outside the garage will form the main area for dining and entertaining. This will comprise a composite decked patio with a large outdoor kitchen to the left. Three parasol trees will provide structure and elegance to the space, with a freestanding hot tub to the left.

At rear of the space the client’s existing raised beds will be rendered and painted, and finished with sandstone coping stones. Standard trees will be planted in between the gaps. The boundaries will be finished with cedar slatted cladding, with increasing gap sizes between boards towards the top to make the most of the view beyond.

Planting in the space will be bold and architectural, with a backbone of evergreen shrubs softened with grasses and herbaceous seasonal perennials.
