London School Garden

A garden full of theatre and drama for children to enjoy.

The brief

The school has recently acquired a sizeable piece of land adjacent to the existing playground. They are already blessed with a gardening space, large playground and activity area, so have decided to develop the new plot into an outdoor performance area.

The Solution

The space will be structured in the style of an amphitheatre, using banks of rock filled gabions with decked tops as seating around a central circle of artificial lawn.

The performance area will comprise curved stone path arching around a semi circle crazy paving using existing paving slabs. This will be backed by a series of 2 metre high timber posts strung with horizontal rows of washing line to enable pupils to hang artwork, sheets, and other backdrops as scenery for performances.

At the other end of the space will be a box office come storage area. It will be constructed from timber, using exterior plywood painted with blackboard paint and tall posts onto which could be used as flag poles.

A countertop will enable snacks and drinks to be served during performances. A tall weatherproof cupboard to the right of the entrance of the box office area will be used to store floor cushions for use as extra seating on the artificial lawn.

An archway with a painted sign will mark the entrance from the playground into the performance space. To the left of this archway will be a smaller, more intimate area featuring a paved circle for small group work.

The planting

Planting in the garden is vibrant and colourful. It will focus on spring and autumn blooms to ensure the best appearance during the majority of the term times, with a backbone of evergreen shrubs for year round interest.
