BRIEF

This skinny south facing garden was very visible from the client’s living room, so the brief included consideration of the aesthetic appearance of the space when viewed from the house. The client wanted a green space that was also suitable for entertaining and dining, and initially specified a large lawn. However, they also wanted a low maintenance space, so during the design process it was agreed that greenery would be provided through planting rather than turf.

DESCRIPTION

This design features a series of rectangular semi-enclosed decking walkways of various dimensions, leading the user on a journey of discovery through the space.

Starting on the right hand side of the garden, adjoining an existing decked patio, a short walkway doglegs into a second walkway enclosed by a rusted mesh ‘cage’. This in turn leads to a second caged walkway, which takes the user to a large rectangular decking patio towards the end of the space. This patio features a fixed seating area comprising a large L-shaped fixed bench, freestanding table and four cube-shaped stools, all constructed from chunky new railway sleepers. The L-shaped bench is framed on either side with cubed railway sleeper planters, containing sculptural box balls.

One of the main focal points of the design is a large stainless steel wall water feature to the left hand side of the first caged walkway. This stylish feature, measuring 6ft high, is the first thing that catches a visitor’s eye as they enter the garden from the house.

Planting within the space takes a cottage-style theme, interspersed with architectural specimens to give form and structure throughout the year. Evergreen shrubs and herbaceous perennials nestle between spring and summer flowering plants for seasonal colour and interest. Flowering climbers are trained over the rusty cages to gradually envelop them over time.

An ambient lighting scheme, combining playfulness with simplicity, completes the design. The cage tunnels have been adorned with fairy lights, while rope lights sited underneath the visible edges of the un-caged walkways guide the user down the space when the sun goes down. Bollard lights installed at either end of the railway sleeper bench give illumination to the dining area and low voltage spotlights give the garden a gentle overall glow.
