The clients have lived in this East London terraced house for a number of years. They have previously made little attempt to improve this small urban garden. The clients were happy to create a multi-functional space, although they were on a limited budget.
The sideway was decked with attractive and durable western red cedar decking, laid in a diagonal pattern for added visual interest. Planting beds to the left and right of the decking were packed with a host of scented climbers to adorn the boundary fence.
The decking continues into the main section of the garden, where it narrows to a point intersecting a large sandstone circle patio. The main focal point of the garden is a curved feature ‘wall’ constructed from vertical red cedar boards of decreasing height installed around a section of the sandstone patio. A gap between each deck board allows views through to the planting beyond. The patio also benefits from a bespoke red cedar bench attached to the front of the curved wall, with a matching freestanding oval table with adjustable legs to allow use as a day bed if desired.
The planting provides structural evergreen shrubs interlaced with attractive white and yellow flowering perennials, as well as climbers around the perimeter.
Our small East London garden had become very neglected and overgrown. Our brief to Earth Designs was to provide an outdoor "living space" that would be easy to maintain. Katrina produced a stylish design that was modern but in keeping with our period property. The work was completed over the summer whilst we were away on holiday so we managed to avoid any disruption. Earth Designs were totally trustworthy and we returned to find the work completed with no sign that all of the debris from the old garden had been carried through the house to be disposed of. We had a couple of teething problems with a few aspects of the job but Earth Designs were quick to return and sort out these issues at no additional cost. We found Matt and Katrina to be very professional and we are enjoying making use of our rejuvenated garden.
